Rust Prevention and Removal: A Quick Primer

Corrosion on bearings leads to equipment failure and can become detrimental. But what would you do if the surface has already started corroding or was not prepared properly in the first place? How would you remove the rust from such metal surfaces?

Usually, Abrasive grinding and sandblasting are common ways to restore rusty metal surfaces and prepare them for painting or further solutions. But Cortec’s Rust removal solutions are better and safer than most rust removal chemicals available in the market, due to its lower acidity and quick drying. Cortec’s biobased rust removers are great items to have on hand for the maintenance to do quick touchups of any rusty spots.

For example, With the use of CorrVerter® Rust Converter and Primer, disruptive surface preparation can be avoided allowing maintenance without operational interruptions. It’s possible with Cortec’s technology to remove rust or prevent rust from happening.

VpCI® CorrVerter is recommended for use on all ferrous metal surfaces as a rust converter/paint primer. The product can be used in situations where proper cleaning or sandblasting is difficult.

This water-based primer is used to apply on already corroded or poorly prepared surfaces. This is mainly used where further corrosion protection is required but it is difficult to achieve.

End result: The solution leaves a shiny surface providing long-term corrosion protection to the metal surfaces.

Follow these five steps to remove rust easily:

1. Apply VpCI®-422 or VpCI®-423 by spray, brush, dip, or squeeze bottle. (VpCI®-422 works well for large dip tank applications; VpCI®-423 gel clings better to vertical surfaces that cannot be dipped.)

2. Allow sitting for 15 minutes to one hour,* depending on the severity of rust.

3. Wipe off the rust and the rust remover, using a basic scrub pad for light abrasion if desired.

4. Rinse with an alkaline cleaner solution such as VpCI®-414, VpCI®-416, or VpCI®-418 LM (diluted up to 5% in water) to remove residue and provide flash rust protection.

5. Repeat if needed.
