One of the big problems that are faced by constructors and owners of sites is rust and corrosion in the concrete structures. This causes damage to the structure and is dangerous for the people too.

Maximum times when a concrete structure is damaged or failed, it is because of corrosion. In this article, we are going to discuss different ways in which you can prevent reinforced concrete corrosion.

Use watertight concrete and cover properly

To avoid corrosion in reinforced concrete, the first and the main way is to cover the structure with a thick concrete layer. By thick concrete, we mean that water in the cement should be less than usual.

The thick cement covering helps protect the concrete from corrosion. It is known that calcium chloride contributes to corrosion.

And thus, the elements in the cement covering help save the concrete from corrosion. At some places, the law has been set for a specific limit in which the chloride ion should be used.

Use CRSD — Corrosion Resistant Steel Deformed Rebars

In any metal, corrosion begins with rust in the inner layer of the metal. The same is the case with reinforced concrete. The CRSD rebars have the ability of self-healing.

They can make a protective layer that can protect the concrete from moisture, sulfur dioxide, chloride, etc. It has a fine texture that helps keep the rust away, ultimately preventing corrosion.

While ordinary bars use flaky oxide for covering, CRSDs use passive oxide. Flaky oxide is not capable of preventing rust as it cannot keep the moisture and oxygen away from the bars. It further causes corrosion.

Passive oxide is just the opposite of flaky oxide. As the nature of passive oxide is self-healing, whenever the layer gets removed due to any reason, a new layer is immediately formed.

CPCC — Cement Polymer Composite Coated Rebars

To protect the bars from getting rust and corrosion, cement polymer composite coating (CPCC) is used. It uses two types of coating of cement for protection from rust.

They are sealer coats and coats of primer. It is one of the best and proven ways of protecting the bars from rust. CPCC uses alkaline in the solution. It makes the solution more compatible and safer. The solution includes in it:

● Solution of sealing

● Solution of inhibitor

● Alkaline powder

● De-rusting powder or solution

● Phosphating jelly

● Primer coats

● Sealer coats
